Kiss The Rain
Song by Billie Myers
Lyrics are in italics
Cherish watched the rain splatter against the glass of the window as the sky gradually grew darker.
'I wonder if 'Fei-Cha is getting rain where he is.' She thought to herself. A bolt of lightning flashed through the sky and she started to count. Three seconds into it, thunder boomed across the sky. Cherish curled into her corner more.
Laughter rang from another part of the Winner mansion, and she knew Fallyn was causing the others to laugh. Her sister both loved and hated these storms.
"They're so much nicer on Earth. So unpredictable." Fallyn had once confided in her sister. Cherish had to agree. She sipped at the hot chocolate one of the maids had brought her and returned her attention to the textbook in her lap.
'The things I'll do for that man.' She thought, as she turned the page, trying to decipher the chinese symbols. 'Going so far as to try to learn his native language. I must be crazy.' She chuckled to herself.
Another bolt of lightning flashed across the sky of the colony and the phone rang. Not the vidphone, but a much older type of phone, one without picture. Cherish went over and picked up the reciever.
"Cherish?" She sat down on the window seat, hard.
"'Fei-Cha? Is it really you?" He chuckled, the sound barely descernable through the static.
"Yes, it's really me. I take it L4 is having a storm? You're breaking up some." Cherish's grin spread across her face. How she missed her love.
Hello, can you hear me
Am I getting through to you
Hello, is it late there
There's a laughter on the line
Are you sure you're there alone
'Cause I'm trying to explain
Something's wrong, you just don't sound the same
Why don't you, why don't you
Go outside, go outside
"Yeah. It's the worst storm they've planned this year." She sighed. "When will you be coming back? I miss you."
"If I told you that, I'd have to kill you." he joked with her. She smiled across the line, holding the reciever to her ear.
"As long as I get to see you one last time, I think I'd die happy." She responded. They danced this dance often when he would be away on missions. Another peal of laughter rang throughout the masion.
"Who was that? Are you alone?" Wufei's voice dropped into a tone that Cherish found she didn't like. She smiled a bit.
"That, my dearest love, was either Quatre or Trowa, laughing at Fallyn. And yes, in a sense I am very alone." She sighed sadly. "I miss you, Wufei." She said softly.
"I know. I miss you, too. More than I thought I might. It's raining there, right?" Cherish nodded and replied in the affirmative. "When we part, since the static seems to be dying down for the moment meaning the storm is subsiding for now, go outside and stand in the rain. It's raining here, too. I, too, shall do the same. I'll be by your side, trust me." Cherish could already feel his strong arms encircling her.
"I'll do that. Wufei." She paused, not knowing if she should continue her thought.
"Yes?" He sounded almost hopeful. She firmed her resolve and finished it.
"I love you." Before he could respond, though, a blinding bolt of lightning flashed, and the line went dead.
Kiss the rain whenever you need me
Kiss the rain whenever I'm gone too long
If your lips feel lonely and thirsty
Kiss the rain and wait for the dawn
Keep in mind, we're under the same sky
And the nights as empty for me as for you
If you feel you can't wait till morning
Kiss the rain, kiss the rain
Kiss the rain
Cherish stared at the reciever, not believing that she had been cut off so fiercely. Tears welled in the corners of her emerald eyes. She passed the cuff of her sweatshirt over her eyes, trying to wipe away the evidence, but more filled the void. She placed the reciever on its base and walked over to the balcony.
Slowly she opened the double doors and stepped out into the rain, barefoot. In seconds, her sweatshirt was soaked through, and her sweatpants were getting there. Cherish opened her arms to the sky, closing her eyes and facing the manufactured clouds. Then she wrapped her arms around herself, imagining Wufei's arms embracing her.

On Earth, Wufei slammed down the vidphone reciever. The mixture of the two storms caused the signal to disconnect. He looked out the window at the deluge that was falling outside on his hotel balcony. He resolutely re-opened a comm line.
"How may I direct your call?" the receptionist on the other end asked him. He regarded her solemnly for a moment before answering.
"I need a shuttle to the L4 colony, preferably one that leaves tonight." The receptionist, whose stormy eyes Wufei would never have noticed prior to Cherish's arrival into his life, turned to her computer and pulled up the flight plans for that evening.
"We have a shuttle leaving at 11pm, sir. Would you like a seat on it?" She asked him. To her, he looked like a forlorn young man who was missing someone he loved. He nodded and she slipped him into the shuttle, though it was booked already. Hey, who was she to stand in the way of love? "The shuttle leaves promptly at 11pm. We usually suggest that passengers arrive approximately 30 minutes early, but I don't think you'll be missing this shuttle." She smiled at him. "Have a good evening, sir." and she shut off the comm link.
"Am I that visible?" Wufei asked to the air as he turned back to his balcony. He moved fluidly over to it and opened the door, stepping out into the rain. In moments, he was soaked though, but he only thought of Cherish, and the feel of her small form in his arms.
Hello, do you miss me
I hear you say you do
But not the way I'm missing you
What's new, how's the weather
Is it stormy where you are
'Cause I'm so close but it feels like you're so far
Oh would it mean anything
If you knew what I'm left imagining
In my mind, in my mind
Would you go, would you go
Kiss the rain
Cherish embraced the rain, as if it could replace her emptiness with its kiss. She let the rain soak her thoroughly then softly padded back into the house. She headed to the bathroom for a towel, leaving a wet trail behind her.
'Thank the Goddess Quatre only has tile through this part of the house.' she thought to herself. 'Otherwise, he might kill me in my sleep.' She smiled at that thought. She knew that Quatre would never harm a hair on her head. They understood each other too well.
She reached the bathroom, closed, and locked the door. She divested herself of her dripping clothing and grabbed a large towel to dry herself with. Once she was dry, she wrapped the towel around herself and, grabbing another towel for her hair, meandered her way to her bedroom.
The room smelled like Wufei. Cherish closed her eyes, inhaling the scent and leaning against the now closed door.
And you'd fall over me
Think of me, think of me
Think of me, only me
Wufei ran through the rain to get to the terminal on time. He hoped desperately that he wasn't late and that the shuttle wouldn't leave without him.
His white suit jacket flapping in the wind behind him, he bolted down the nearly deserted hallway towards the gate of his shuttle.
"Has the shuttle left yet?" He gasped out at the woman sitting at the terminal. She turned to him, giving in a glance-over with her eyes.
"You must be the young man who I slipped into the already booked shuttle for L4." She smiled up at him. "I regret to inform you that the shuttle left just moments before you arrived. However," she continued, despite Wufei's groan of disbelief, "I took the liberty of contacting Mr. Winner, who I believe you know well. I did not tell him the full situation, or who was involved, but I know him to be a compassionate man. He has allowed you use of a private shuttle." She beamed up at him, his eyes wide in surprise.
"Tha..thank you." He stuttered out. "Thank you." He repeated, this time more firmly. Her stormy eyes lit up with the smile that overtook her face.
"Who am I to stand in the way of True Love, Mr. Chang? Now, hurry to Terminal 459. The private shuttle should be waiting for you there." She beamed up at him.
Wufei ran in the direction of the terminal, glancing over his shoulder just long enough to wave to the very nice attendant.
Kiss the rain whenever you need me
Kiss the rain whenever I'm gone too long If your lips feel lonely and tempted
Kiss the rain and wait for the dawn
Keep in mind, we're under the same sky
And the nights as empty for me as for you
If you feel you can't wait till morning
Kiss the rain, kiss the rain
Kiss the rain
Kiss the rain (kiss the rain)
Cherish awoke, her eyes opening sleepily. She looked around the room and noticed she was still in the Reading Room she had been in since early afternoon. The textbook laid on the table beside her, the table lamp on.
'Quatre must've come in to check on me as I slept. Him or Fally.' She thought to herself. A small *swish* sound of fabric startled Cherish and she was instantly alert, her eyes searching the room for the source.
He stood in a shadowed corner of the room. All she could make out were his white slacks. Slowly, his figure moved into the light and Cherish gasped in delight.
"WUFEI!" She shouted and leapt from the couch to his arms.
"Shh. You'll wake the whole house up." But Wufei couldn't help but smile as he clung to his beloved Cherish.
"I don't care!" She whispered as she hugged him tightly. "I love you."
"I love you, too, Cherish."
Hello, can you hear me
